What You Can and Cannot Do with Dental Implants

What You Can and Cannot Do with Dental Implants

For those looking to replace missing teeth, dental implants are definitely going to be your best option. When it comes to dental implants, though, there are certain things you can and cannot do.

For instance, most adults in good health are considered to be good candidates for dental implants. If you have uncontrolled gum disease or uncontrolled diabetes, though, you may not be the best candidate. If you are able to get those conditions under control, you may once again be considered a good candidate for implants. You also cannot have dental implants placed if you are suffering from a terminal form of cancer. The dental implant placement procedure requires that the implant be able to fuse with your bone over the course of several months. Terminal cancer will unfortunately prevent that from happening. You also should not be smoking if you want to have implants placed. Tobacco products also make it harder to properly heal from the dental implants surgery. Furthermore, you need to have enough strength and density in your jawbone in order to have dental implants placed, but if you lack these necessary qualities, you can still have implants placed after a bone graft surgery.

If you are in good health, the types of things you can do with them are basically the same as what you can do with natural teeth. You can eat and speak just like normal, and since your aesthetics will be greatly improved, you will also be able to smile like normal.
