Uses of Single Dental Implants

Uses of Single Dental ImplantsA dental implant is the single most effective replacement option for a missing tooth. Because it is fused into your jawbone, a dental implant fitted with a crown mimics the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth.

The first step in receiving a dental implant is the consultation. During the consultation, the dentist will likely take imaging of your teeth to ensure that you are good candidate. Dental implants do require the jaw bone to have enough density in order to be able to support the implant. If you do not have the necessary bone support, a bone graft can be done to provide you with it.

The surgery to place the implant will require the surgeon to make an incision into your gums. The implant will then be drilled into your bone. It can take up to six months for your bone to fully heal and fuse with the implant. If your implant had an abutment already attached, then the crown will be placed at your next visit. If your implant did not already have an abutment attached, then the next visit will be used to perform the surgery that is necessary for placing the abutment onto the implant. It takes a couple of weeks to heal from this procedure, and then your crown will be attached at the next visit.

A dental implant is the preferred option because it keeps the jaw bone stimulated by being placed directly into it. Other tooth replacement options do not offer this, and as a result, the bone below the missing tooth will start to absorb. In addition to allowing the patient to eat as they normally do, dental implants also return proper aesthetics to a smile.
