Getting Multiple Dental Implants

When seeking to replace all or most of your teeth, dental implants provide the most effective treatment option.

Traditional dentures are notoriously uncomfortable and make eating and speaking difficult. Additionally, traditional dentures have the tendency to fall out. Dentures that are supported by multiple dental implants eliminate the need to worry about these issues. Multiple dental implants can be used to secure a fixed bridge or a removable overdenture. These devices allow patients to eat and speak as they normally would, and prevent the embarrassment of your dentures falling out in public. Furthermore, since multiple implants are all fused into the jawbone, they keep it stimulated and prevent bone loss from occurring.

Your candidacy for receiving multiple dental implants will be determined at the time of your consultation. The surgeon may take X-rays to determine your eligibility. If you do not have enough jaw bone left to support the implants, bone graft surgery may be required before the implants can be placed.

During the placement surgery, the surgeon will make an incision into the gums at each point where an implant will be placed. Usually six implants per arch is sufficient to support a fixed bridge or a removable overdenture, but only your surgeon will be able to say for sure how many implants will be required. The implants will individually be drilled into your jaw bone. It will take around six months for the implants to heal and fuse to the bone. If the abutment was already attached to the implant, then the crowns will be placed on the next visit. If the abutments need to be attached separately, an additional surgery will be required to attach them. You will likely recover within a few weeks from this additional surgery if it is necessary, and the crowns will be placed at your next visit.
