Available Types of Dental Implants

Available Types of Dental ImplantsWhether you are looking to replace a single tooth or all of your teeth, dental implants are your best option. Not only do they mimic the look and feel of a natural tooth, but they also mimic the function of a natural tooth. There are several different types of dental implants that are available.

Dental implants that are placed directly into the jawbone are referred to as endosteal implants. They are the most common type of implant. A placement surgery is required in order to be fit with an endosteal implant. Dental implants that are placed under the gum, but on top of the jawbone are referred to as subperiosteal implants.

Single dental implants are used to replace a single missing tooth. If you are looking to replace multiple teeth, that is usually done with an implant-supported bridge. This type of bridge works a lot like a standard dental bridge, but instead of the surrounding teeth acting as abutments for the bridge, two dental implants act as abutments instead. Full dental implants are used if you are trying to replace all of your teeth. Usually 4-8 dental implants are required to replace a full arch of teeth.

Mini dental implants are a type of subperiosteal implant. These type of implants are smaller than the standard dental implants and do not require as invasive of a placement surgery. Since they are smaller, they do not require that a patient has the same level of strength and density in their jawbone that standard dental implants require in order to be placed. As a result, mini dental implants are used for patients who do not qualify as candidates for standard dental implants without first undergoing a bone graft.
